Lip blush healing stages: day by day, with real photos and aftercare

Your lips heal in four weeks, and they change colour three times along the way. On day two they look like lipstick a shade too bright. On day five they peel. By day eight the colour seems to have gone. By week four it comes back softer and even. The photos on this page are my clients’ lips at each stage, so you know what you are looking at before it happens to you.

Day 1 to 2: swollen and brighter than we agreed

Lips swell more than brows or eyelids, because the skin there is thin and full of blood vessels. Expect them to look fuller and a shade or two stronger than the colour we chose. Part of that brightness is fresh pigment on the surface. Part of it is redness underneath. Neither stays.

The tenderness feels like a mild burn. Most clients eat soft food that evening and sleep well. A cold pack wrapped in a clean cloth, ten minutes at a time, brings the swelling down faster.

Your job: keep a thin layer of the balm I give you on your lips through the day. Drink through a straw. Skip hot coffee, chilli and salty food. Take a photo in daylight, so you can compare it with week four.

Day 3 to 5: darker, tight, then peeling

The colour deepens, and the lips feel tight and dry, like after a day in the sun. Around day three or four a thin film forms and starts to lift, often from the centre of the lower lip first. You will see cracks and patches: some areas peeled, some still dark.

This stage decides how even your result heals. Each flake holds a little pigment on its underside. When it falls on its own, the colour underneath has set. When you pull it, the spot underneath heals lighter.

Your job: more balm, less touching. A dry flake catches on your teeth and tempts you to bite it. Put balm on instead and it softens. No lipstick, no gloss, no lip scrub.

Day 5 to 8: the pale stage

The last flakes come off and the lips look pale, sometimes close to your natural colour. Clients message me on day seven convinced the pigment did not take. It did. A fresh layer of skin now covers it, and that new skin is cloudy for a while.

End of peeling: new skin shows through, and the colour looks lighter than it will heal.

Your job: nothing new. Keep balm on, keep the sun off, and leave the colour to come back on its own.

Weeks 2 to 4: the colour comes back

As the new skin settles, the colour returns through it, softer and more even than on day one. By week four you see about the final result. The healed shade is the pigment seen through your own lip tone. That is why I mix the colour against your lips in daylight at the start, and not from a chart.

On lips with a purple or brown base, the healed colour can come back cooler than planned. If that happens, I adjust it at the retouch. If your lips are dark across the whole surface, we plan lip neutralization first, so the blush heals clean.

Weeks 6 to 8: the retouch

Lips do not heal evenly in one session. A few spots hold less colour than their neighbours, and only a full heal shows where. At the retouch I fill those spots, sharpen the border and adjust the tone if it healed warmer or cooler than we planned. The second healing runs shorter and milder: a few days of bright colour and light peeling. The retouch is part of the ₱14,990 price.

Aftercare, the full list

  • Balm every few hours for the first week. Dry lips crack, and cracks take pigment.
  • No spicy, hot or salty food for five days. Drink through a straw for the first two.
  • No lipstick or gloss for ten days. No kissing for five.
  • Leave the flakes. Each one you pull takes colour with it.
  • No sun on the lips and no whitening toothpaste around them for two weeks. After that, a balm with SPF when you are outside keeps the colour longer.
  • No swimming pools or sea for a week.

Cold sores: plan before the session

Any needle work on the lip can wake up the cold sore virus. If you have ever had one, ask your doctor for the antiviral you take for cold sores and start it before the session. Tell me at the consultation. A cold sore during healing can leave a lighter patch, which I then fix at the retouch.

When to message me

Swelling that grows after day three, yellow crust, pain that gets worse, or a blister on the lip. These are rare, and I want to see a photo the same day. Peeling, patchiness and a pale week are normal; save those photos for your week-four comparison.

The session itself, the colours I work with and who should wait are on the lip blush page. To see how long the colour holds after it heals, read how long lip blush lasts in Manila. If you want me to look at your lips first, the consultation is free.

Questions about lip blush healing

How long does lip blush take to heal?

The surface heals in about a week: swelling for two days, peeling from day three to about day eight. The true colour shows by week four, and the retouch follows at six to eight weeks.

Why did my lip blush disappear after peeling?

It did not. New skin grew over the pigment and stays cloudy for a week or two. Between week two and week four the colour comes back through it, softer and more even.

Is it normal for lip blush to peel unevenly?

Yes. Some areas lift on day three, others on day six. Leave every flake to fall on its own; a pulled flake takes pigment with it and leaves a lighter spot.

When can I wear lipstick after lip blush?

After ten days, once all the flakes are gone. Before that, lipstick and gloss pull flakes off early and can carry bacteria into healing skin.

Can I eat normally after lip blush?

Soft food is fine from the first evening. Skip spicy, hot and salty food for five days and drink through a straw for the first two.

Is the retouch included in the lip blush price?

Yes. With Kate Kanner in Salcedo Village, lip blush costs ₱14,990 with the free consultation and the retouch at six to eight weeks included.
