Dark lips and permanent makeup: why blush alone heals muddy

The most common unhappy lip blush I see did not go wrong in the chair. It went wrong at the consultation, when a pink was chosen for lips with a purple base and nobody explained what would happen four weeks later. This is what happens, and what neutralization does about it.

The colour you see is the pigment through your lip

Pigment goes into the skin, not onto it. Once healed, you see it through a thin layer of your own lip, and your lip has a colour of its own. On a pale pink lip, a pink pigment heals pink. On a lip with a purple, brown or blue base, the same pink heals as pink mixed with purple, which is a dull mauve or grey. No amount of extra pigment fixes that, because the base is under the pigment, not beside it.

Dark lips are common on Filipino skin and they are not a fault. They are a base that has to be accounted for, the way a painter primes a dark wall before a light colour.

What neutralization does

Colour correction works the way a makeup artist’s wheel works. Orange cancels blue. Yellow cancels purple. Peach cancels grey. I place warm corrective pigments into the dark areas of the lip so the cool tone underneath stops showing through. Once healed, the lip reads as a neutral, even, natural colour. From there, a blush shade can go on top and heal as the shade you chose, or you can stop, because for many clients the even natural tone was the goal.

Session by session

  1. Consultation. I look at the lips in daylight and tell you how many sessions to expect. Two is common; three for very dark lips or for smokers, whose lips darken again over time.
  2. First session. Mapping, numbing twice, then corrective pigment across the dark areas. This session does most of the visible work.
  3. The first week. The lips look warmer than you expect, sometimes plainly orange. Clients who were not warned panic here. It is the corrective pigment before the skin has healed over it.
  4. Weeks two to four. The warmth settles as the skin clears. By week four the lip reads neutral.
  5. Second session, six to eight weeks later. I even out the parts that healed lighter and adjust the warmth. A third session, if needed, follows the same gap.
  6. Then, if you want colour. Lip blush in your chosen shade, on a base that no longer fights it.

Healing, in short

Swollen and bright for two days, flaking by day five, pale by day eight, settled by week four. Balm often, no picking, no hot or spicy food for five days, no lipstick for ten. If you get cold sores, the antiviral you normally use starts before the session.

What neutralization will not do

It will not bleach the lips or make them pink on their own. It stays inside your lip line. It will not fix darkness with a medical cause, and if I suspect one I say so and send you to a doctor before we do anything. Lightening creams and peels work on the surface and fade back within weeks; pigment sits under the surface and stays.

Who should wait

Pregnant or breastfeeding. Active cracks, cold sores or a peel on the lips in the last month. Lip filler in the last four weeks. Smokers can go ahead with the longer timeline above.

The service itself is described on the lip neutralization page, and what comes after it on the lip blush page. Send two daylight photos on WhatsApp or book the free consultation and I will tell you how many sessions your lips need.

Questions about dark lips

Are dark lips a problem that needs fixing?

No. Naturally dark lips are common on Filipino skin and nothing is wrong with them. Neutralization is for people who want the tone lighter or more even, or who want a lip blush colour that heals true. It is a choice, not a correction of a fault.

Will my lips be orange forever?

For about a week they look warmer than you expect, sometimes plainly orange. That is the corrective pigment doing its job before the skin heals over it. By week four the warmth settles into a neutral, natural lip.

How many sessions does it take?

Two is common, three for very dark or smoker’s lips, six to eight weeks apart. The first session does most of the visible work; the later ones even out what healed lighter.

Can I have a pink lip blush after?

Yes, and that is the usual plan: neutralize first, then add the blush shade once the base is even. Some clients stop after neutralization because the natural tone was what they wanted.
