Microblading healing and aftercare: what happens day by day

If you had microblading in the last few weeks, this page is for you. Healing strokes look alarming in the second week, and most people message their artist convinced it failed. Usually it did not. Here is the normal timeline, the aftercare that decides how much of the work survives, and the signs that mean you should go back.

I do not offer microblading myself; I work with dots, as powder and ombre brows. I do correct a lot of healed strokes, and good aftercare is the biggest difference I see between brows that hold and brows that blur.

Days 1 to 3: dark and sharp

The strokes look darker and crisper than what you agreed to, and the skin around them may be pink and slightly swollen. Lymph, a clear fluid, may rise to the surface. Blot it gently with clean tissue so it does not dry into a thick crust over the strokes.

Days 4 to 7: tight and itchy

The colour darkens further and the skin feels tight. Fine flakes start to form along the strokes. This is the stage where people pick. Do not. Each flake carries pigment with it, and a picked flake leaves a gap in the stroke.

Days 7 to 14: the ghost phase

Flaking finishes and the brows look patchy and much lighter than expected, sometimes almost gone. New skin over the pigment is still cloudy. This is the phase that sends most people back to the salon in a panic.

Weeks 3 to 4: colour returns

As the new skin clears, the strokes come back through. What looked lost is usually still there, a little softer than on day one.

Weeks 6 to 8: the true result and the second session

Now you can see what held. Some strokes healed fully, some partly, a few may be missing. The second session fills them. Skipping it leaves a patchy brow that fades unevenly.

Aftercare, the first ten days

  • Keep the brows dry for seven days: no swimming, sauna, steam, or long hot showers on the face
  • No gym or sweating for the first week; sweat carries pigment out of open strokes
  • No makeup on or near the brows for ten days
  • Apply only the ointment your artist gave you, in a thin layer; more is not better
  • Do not pick, scratch or rub the flakes
  • Sleep on your back if you can
  • Stay out of direct sun, and wear a hat outdoors

Aftercare once healed

  • Sunscreen on the brows every day; in Manila this matters more than most aftercare lists admit
  • Keep acids, retinoids and exfoliating products away from the brow area
  • Blot oil rather than scrubbing; oily skin is where strokes blur first

When to go back to your artist

  • Swelling, heat or redness that grows after day three instead of settling
  • Yellow crust, pus, or a fever: see a doctor first, then your artist
  • Strokes that look blurred or merged at week six, not only light
  • A colour that heals clearly grey, blue or red

Why strokes blur, and what to do if yours did

On oily or combination skin, oil pushes pigment out of the shallow cut and the stroke widens. Aftercare slows this but cannot stop it on every skin. If your healed strokes merged into a soft block, a powder or ombre brow can usually cover them; dark or misplaced work may need lightening first. The details are in old brow tattoo turned grey and brow tattoo on oily skin.

For comparison, the healing of dot-based brows is in powder brows healing stages. If you want a second opinion on healed strokes, send two daylight photos or book the free consultation.

Questions about microblading healing

Why does fresh microblading look gone after a week?

The flakes took the top layer of colour and the new skin is still cloudy. The strokes come back through between weeks three and four.

Can I wash my face after microblading?

Wash around the brows and keep the brows themselves dry for seven days. Blot any fluid gently with clean tissue.

When can I work out after microblading?

After seven days. Sweat carries pigment out of open strokes.

My strokes blurred. Can they be fixed?

Usually. Faded or blurred strokes can often be covered with powder or ombre brows; dark or misplaced work may need lightening first.
