Microblading near me: what to ask before you book
Search “microblading near me” in Metro Manila and you get dozens of salons, most with similar photos and similar promises. The difference shows in a five minute conversation, if you know what to ask. I do not offer microblading myself, but a large part of my work is correcting it, so I see which questions would have saved my clients a year of fixing. Here they are, with what a good answer sounds like.
1. “Is my skin right for microblading?”
Good answer: the artist looks at your skin, asks whether it gets oily by midday, checks your pores, and tells you if strokes will blur on you. They may suggest shading or powder brows instead.
Warning sign: “It works on everyone.” Oily and combination skin, which is most skin in Manila, pushes pigment out of shallow cuts. The brow blurs within months.
2. “Can I see healed photos?”
Good answer: photos at six weeks, six months, a year, ideally on skin like yours, and from the same artist who will work on you.
Warning sign: only fresh photos taken minutes after the session. Fresh strokes always look crisp. The result you live with is the healed one.
3. “Who does the second session, and is it included?”
Good answer: the same artist, at six to eight weeks, included in the price.
Warning sign: a different artist, an extra fee that only appears later, or “most people don’t need it.” Everyone needs it.
4. “Will you draw the shape on me first?”
Good answer: yes, measured against your face, drawn in pencil, adjusted until you approve it in a mirror, before any cutting. In my sessions no pigment goes in until you have said yes to the shape.
Warning sign: a stencil pressed on in a minute, or a shape copied from a photo.
5. “What colour will it fade to?”
Good answer: a pigment chosen for your skin undertone and hair, with an honest note about whether it fades warm or cool.
Warning sign: “black” or “dark brown” picked from a chart. Carbon-heavy pigments are what turn grey and blue years later.
6. “Are the blades single-use?”
Good answer: yes, opened in front of you, with gloves changed and the area cleaned. Ask to see the sealed pack.
7. “What if I don’t like it?”
Good answer: an honest description of what can be adjusted at the second session, and what cannot. Strokes can be added; strokes that are too dark or too high cannot be erased at a retouch.
8. “Who should not get this?”
Good answer: pregnancy and breastfeeding, active skin conditions on the brows, keloid history, blood thinners, recent isotretinoin or peels. An artist who lists these without being asked is looking after you.
Why the questions matter more than the price
A brow that blurs or heals grey rarely gets fixed in one visit. It may need lightening over several sessions, then new work, then its retouch. I see this every week. The guide to old brow tattoos shows what that path costs in time.
Where I stand
I work only with dots, as powder and ombre brows, because they hold on oily skin and fade evenly instead of blurring. If you have read this far and suspect strokes will not suit you, the comparison is in microblading in the Philippines and brow tattoo on oily skin. If you would like a second opinion before booking anyone, book the free consultation; I will tell you what I think your skin will do.
Questions about choosing a microblading artist
How do I know if a microblading artist is good?
Ask for healed photos at six months and a year on skin like yours, and ask whether your skin suits strokes at all. A good artist will say no to some clients.
Should the second session be free?
It should be included in the quoted price and done by the same artist.
What pigment colour should I choose?
One chosen for your skin undertone and hair, not black from a chart. Carbon-heavy pigments are the ones that turn grey or blue years later.
Can I get a second opinion before booking?
Yes. Kate Kanner gives free consultations in Makati and will tell you whether strokes suit your skin, even though she does not offer them.
