Eyebrow tattoo vs microblading: which one to get in Manila
In the Philippines, “eyebrow tattoo” covers three different things: the solid brow tattoo your tita got in the nineties, microblading, and powder or ombre brows. They heal and age in different ways. My own work is powder and ombre brows. Microblading is not on my menu. This page compares all three side by side, so you can pick the one that suits your skin before you pay anyone.
The short answer
Microblading draws hair strokes by hand and looks like hair on dry, fine-pored skin. Modern eyebrow tattoo, meaning powder or ombre brows, shades the brow with fine machine dots and holds its shape on oily skin. The old solid tattoo is the one to avoid: it goes deep, turns blue or grey, and stays for decades. With me, powder or ombre brows cost ₱14,990, with the retouch included.
| Question | Microblading | Powder or ombre brows | Old solid tattoo |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tool | Hand blade | Machine, fine needle | Tattoo machine |
| Look | Hair strokes | Soft shade, like pencil | Solid block of colour |
| Depth | Upper skin | Upper skin | Deeper |
| Best skin | Dry to normal | Any, including oily | None |
| Ageing | Strokes soften, can blur | Dots lighten, shape stays | Turns blue or grey, stays |
| Lasts | One to three years | Eighteen months to three years | Decades |
The old eyebrow tattoo, and why people still fear the word
Many Filipinas grew up seeing a mother or aunt with thick, dark brows that turned blue-grey over the years. Those came from a standard tattoo machine and body tattoo ink, placed deep and filled solid. The ink does not fade the way modern pigment does. It changes colour and stays.
Modern brow work sits in the upper layer of the skin and uses pigment designed to fade. Your body clears it over a few years, so you can change the shape as your face changes. If you already have an old tattoo that turned grey, read old brow tattoo turned grey or blue.
Microblading: what it does well
A microblading artist uses a hand tool with a row of fine needles and cuts thin lines into the skin, one stroke at a time, in the direction your hair grows. On dry skin with small pores, the healed strokes look like real hair up close. For someone with full brows and a few gaps, that can be the right choice.
Oily skin is where it fails. Oil pushes pigment out of each cut, the strokes widen, and within months they merge into a blur. Manila heat makes skin oilier, and blurred microblading is the most common correction I see. The longer version is in microblading in the Philippines.
Powder and ombre brows: what I do
I place pigment as thousands of fine dots with a machine and layer them into a shade. Powder brows look evenly filled, like a light pencil. Ombre brows run as a gradient, soft at the front and defined at the tail. The shade sits behind your own hairs, and your hairs give the texture.

Dots have no edge to blur. When oil lifts some pigment over the years, the brow gets lighter and keeps its shape. That is the main reason I chose this technique for skin in Manila.
How to choose
- Oily or combination skin: powder or ombre brows.
- You fill your brows with pencil or powder now: powder brows give the same look.
- You want a defined tail and a soft front: ombre brows.
- Dry skin, small pores, full brows with gaps: microblading can work. Ask for healed photos at one year on skin like yours.
- Old dark tattoo already there: start with a correction consultation before any new work.

What to ask any artist before booking
- Can I see healed photos, six weeks or more after the session, on skin like mine?
- Will you draw the shape on me first and wait for my approval in the mirror?
- Is the retouch included, and who does it?
With me, the answer to all three is yes, and I do every step myself. The full brow service is on the eyebrow tattoo page, prices are on one page, and the consultation is free.
Questions about eyebrow tattoo and microblading
Is microblading better than eyebrow tattoo?
It depends on your skin. Microblading looks like hair on dry, fine-pored skin. Powder and ombre brows hold their shape better on oily skin, which is common in Manila.
Will a modern eyebrow tattoo turn blue?
Not when the artist uses brow pigment in the upper skin. The blue and grey brows people remember came from body tattoo ink placed deep.
Which lasts longer, microblading or powder brows?
Powder brows usually hold longer, about eighteen months to three years. Microblading softens in one to three years and fades fastest on oily skin.
Does eyebrow tattoo hurt more than microblading?
Both feel like pressure and light scratching with numbing cream. Most clients find machine shading gentler than the cutting of a blade.
Can powder brows cover old microblading?
Often, if the old strokes are light enough. Kate checks this at the free consultation. Work that is too dark needs lightening by a removal specialist first.
