Eyeliner tattoo healing and aftercare, day by day

Eyeliner tattoo healing usually means swelling during the first few days, small flakes in the first week, then a lighter-looking line before the colour settles around week four. The touch-up is at six to eight weeks. This guide covers each stage and the aftercare instructions Kate gives clients at Reverie in Makati.

Before you come in

Two things settle most of the healing before the needle starts. Lash extensions come off at least a few days before the appointment; glue and pigment do not mix, and I cannot map a clean line through extensions. Contact lenses come out at the session and stay out for 24 hours, so bring glasses. If you use a lash serum, stop it a week before; it thins the lid skin and increases bleeding.

Day 1: swelling

You leave with a fine dark line that looks about a third bolder than the final result and lids that feel tight. The swelling arrives overnight. The morning after, most clients look like they cried before bed. This is the peak.

What to do: a cold compress through a clean cloth, ten minutes at a time, and sleep with your head raised on an extra pillow. No ice directly on the skin. Wash your face with the eyes closed and pat dry, never rub.

Day 2 to 3: the line darkens, swelling fades

The swelling drops through day two and is mostly gone by day three. The line can look darker than day one as the surface pigment dries. Itching starts along the lash line.

What to do: ointment in a very thin film with a clean cotton bud, morning and night. Thin means you can barely see it. A thick layer keeps the area wet and lifts the crust early. No eye makeup of any kind, no eye creams, no false lashes.

Day 4 to 7: flaking

Tiny flakes lift along the line, much smaller than the brow flakes. They itch and they catch on the lashes. This is where people rub, and rubbing pulls pigment out in a patch.

What to do: let the flakes fall. If a flake is hanging on a lash, dab it with a wet cotton bud rather than pulling. Wear sunglasses outside; sun on healing pigment fades it, and the glasses stop you touching. No swimming, sauna or hard workouts until day seven.

Day 7 to 14: the pale stage

Flaking is over and the line looks thinner and lighter than you wanted, sometimes barely there. As with brows, fresh skin has grown over the pigment and is still cloudy. Nothing has gone anywhere.

What to do: from day ten you can go back to your usual cleanser on the lids. From day ten, mascara is allowed, and only from a new tube. Old mascara carries bacteria from before the procedure. Lenses are fine again from day two as long as you put them in with clean hands and do not rub the lids.

Week 3 to 4: the result

The skin clears and the line comes back, softer and slightly thinner than day one. Week four is the honest version. For a classic lash line it means lashes that look thicker with no visible liner. For a powder liner it means a soft shaded band you can build on with makeup or leave alone.

Week 6 to 8: the retouch

Eyelid skin moves with every blink, so a few spots along the line always heal lighter. At the retouch I fill them and even the density. It is a shorter session and the healing repeats in a milder form. The retouch is part of the price.

Aftercare rules that decide the result

  • No mascara, liner or eye cream for ten days. New mascara after that.
  • Contact lenses out for the session and for 24 hours after.
  • Lash extensions off before, and none for four weeks after.
  • No rubbing, no picking, no swimming or sauna for a week.
  • Sunglasses outdoors for the first week.
  • Eyelash serum stays off until week four.

When to call me the same day

Swelling that gets worse after day two rather than better. Yellow discharge. Redness spreading beyond the lid. Pain rather than tightness. Eyes are the one area where I want to see any of these within hours, not days. Everything else above is the normal course.

Questions about eyeliner healing

How swollen will my eyes be?

Most swelling is on the morning after, and it looks like you cried the night before. It goes down through the day and is mostly gone by day three. A cold compress through a clean cloth helps; ice directly on the skin does not.

When can I wear mascara again?

Ten days after the session, with a new tube. Old mascara carries bacteria from before the procedure, and an infection on a healing lash line is the one complication worth avoiding at any cost.

I wear contact lenses. What do I do?

Take them out for the session and keep them out for 24 hours after. Bring your glasses. From day two, lenses are fine as long as you put them in with clean hands and do not rub the lids.

Can I get lash extensions after eyeliner tattoo?

Four weeks after the session, once the skin has fully closed. Extensions applied earlier trap glue and bacteria against the healing line. Have any current extensions removed before the appointment.

Will the line look thick while it heals?

For the first three days it looks darker and a little thicker than the final result, because the pigment sits on top of the skin as well as inside it. By week two it looks thinner than you wanted. Week four is the truth.
