Brow lamination vs brow tattoo: which one fixes your brows
Brow lamination and brow tattoo get compared because both promise brows you do not have to fill in every morning. They solve different problems. Lamination styles the hair you have; a tattoo adds colour where hair is missing. Here is how to tell which problem you have, and when the two work together.
What brow lamination does
A chemical solution softens the brow hairs so they can be brushed upward and set in place, usually with a tint. For several weeks the brows look fuller and groomed because the existing hairs stand up and cover more skin. Nothing is placed in the skin. When the effect wears off, the hairs return to their natural direction.
It works well if
- You have plenty of brow hair that grows flat or in different directions
- You like a fluffy, brushed-up look
- You want a low-commitment change you can stop at any time
It cannot help if
- There are gaps with no hair, from over-plucking, age or thinning
- The tails are sparse or missing
- The shape itself is uneven between the two sides
What a brow tattoo does
I build the brow from thousands of fine pigment dots placed with a machine, as powder or ombre brows. The colour sits in the skin, so it fills gaps, rebuilds missing tails and evens out the shape. It does not change the direction of your hair. Healed, powder brows look like a light pencil fill and ombre brows like brows done with product. The difference between the two is in ombre brows vs powder brows.
It works well if
- You fill in gaps or draw tails every morning
- Your brows are thin, uneven or fading with age
- You have oily skin and want a result that holds in Manila heat
It cannot do
- Make the hairs stand up or look fluffier
- Imitate individual hairs up close
The quick test
Brush your brows up in the mirror without product. If you see skin through them in the same places every day, colour is what is missing, and that is a tattoo. If the brows look full once brushed but fall flat by noon, that is styling, and that is lamination.
Doing both
Many people with sparse brows want both: colour underneath and brushed-up hair on top. The order matters. The brow tattoo comes first, and the skin needs to heal fully, through the retouch at six to eight weeks, before any lamination solution touches it. Chemicals on healing skin can lift pigment and irritate the area. After the retouch has healed, lamination on top is fine.
If you laminate already, stop at least two weeks before a brow tattoo session so the hairs settle and I can map the shape to your real brow.
Cost over a year
Lamination is cheaper per visit and repeats every few weeks. A brow tattoo costs more once, includes the retouch, and then lasts with refreshes years apart. Which works out cheaper depends on how often you would laminate. I do both. Brow lift with tint is ₱2,499 a visit and brow tattoo costs ₱14,990 with the retouch included; what a fair price includes is in eyebrow tattoo price in the Philippines.
Healed brow work is on the eyebrow tattoo page. If you are not sure which problem you have, book the free consultation; I will draw the shape on you and tell you whether colour is what is missing.
